This list is a great list of things in the show, but I feel like that’s a little harsh to kids. The target demographic for Nickelodeon is from 10 to 14 years old. I don’t know about you, but I feel like 10 to 14 year olds are neither SCARED WITLESS by a little dark themes, nor stupid. Even if they don’t understand in laymans terms, kids get the gist of a lot of things.

If you don’t think kids get the street rat issues, please, by all means, take away Aladdin from their video collection. If you don’t think kids get the money issues, please by all means find a way to keep them from looking at the price tags on those nice toys they want. If you think kids don’t get doing hard labor, please put on some blinders so they don’t see their plumber/electritian/carpenter/powerplant worker/etc dads or uncles or grandfathers.

If you think a kid is going to interpret “house call” as sexual, you really forgot what it was like to be a kid.

Street kids - see above with the Aladdin reference.

Turf wars - they didn’t SHOW any turf wars, they mentioned it. Kids get that. Hello, remember the playground turf wars? No? Did you go to a school where they stopped you all from fighting over who got the swings or the backboards or the basketball hoops? Really? I don’t know, this doesn’t seem like such a difficult or mature issue.

“Pabu’s a friend not a snack” …really? I don’t - kids get this. Big things eat little things.

Sometimes those little things are animals.

-sigh- I could keep going but really I’m just surprised that people really think this show is too ‘dark’ or ‘deep’ for kids. But I think it’s a good thing. Kids don’t like being pandered to. If they don’t see it here, they’re going to see it somewhere else.

Wasn’t this why we liked Avatar: The Last Airbender in the first place? It didn’t pander to us. It told us straight up that it was about a kid who was the LAST OF HIS PEOPLE - EVERYONE ELSE OF HIS ‘RACE/ETHNICITY/BENDING LIFESTYLE’ HAD BEEN ERADICATED.

I just, really? Please, it’s just sad that we think we have to pander to kids. It’s why I think kids television sucks now. We’re trying to “protect kids” from things that they’ll see eventually, and even if we aren’t doing it in the name of “protection” we just think kids are stupid or too fragile to see or hear things. Take a look at old school Disney and tell me it’s not the same. If you don’t think that Hunchback of Notre Dame is dark, or that Beauty in the Beast has some really dark things in it, you obviously were watching with your eyes closed.

Please, don’t pander about something that kids get. Moral ambiguity is something we deal with in real life. If you haven’t seen playground bullies then you don’t understand how easy this concept is for people to grasp. It’s not that frightening or terrifying for a kid who looks at the world in such an easy view. They don’t overcomplicate things they way we do.

I don’t know, it just - ugh, I’m getting very tl;dr aren’t I. YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND MY FEELS WHEN IT COMES TO THINGS LIKE THIS THOUGH.

I remember being eleven and watching things on television (anime and things, not like Pokemon which could be considered dark - it’s like dog fights! but like Yu-Gi-Oh and Digimon and things that were not very kid show-like at the time) and getting it.

tl;dr

Honestly, the original series had bad stuff too, but we aren’t all scarred for life. Actually, I think kids who grew up watching this show turned out better!

There was “dark references” in here too but I understood them all when I was like 10 and here I am, watching Korra, not a paranoid psycho child. I think we’re underestimating children a little with this post. Oh, and making a house call meaning sex? Really? Like Korra would ever agree, plus then why did he look for him at Korra’s training center thing and not in the house?

A lot of these points are blowing things out of proportion.

remember when we barely had any news. so we used movie clips the actors were in. we got fan cast news. we edited our actors hair colors all the time. we died with out a scrap of news. then we got stills. stayed up and watched award shows together. cried over everything with the…
